Richard Dix
The Actors Real name was Ernest Carlton Brimmer
Like John Adams Dix, Richard Dix was a Soldier. He was born in 1893 in St. Paul, Minn., and discovered his true
avocation -- acting -- while still a high school student.
His family had other plans, however, and Richard started medical studies at the University of Minnesota.
But his passion for the stage prevailed. Academia could not hold his interest, and he left school to play in stock
productions until he was cast in one of Uncle Sam’s biggest productions: World War I.
Military service was just a short for him, though, and he was soon back in business on the stage. His
rugged good looks made him a popular star in westerns of the silent film era. His deep voice and commanding presence
kept him on the stage for the "talkies."
His most famous performances were in "Cimarron" in 1931, and the popular "Whistler" series adapted from radio
in the 1940s. He died in 1949.
