OB/GYN — Midwifery Service

Midwifery means "with women."

Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center has a large midwifery service. Our Certified Nurse Midwives are highly trained, all holding a master's degree in nurse-midwifery, and have a wealth of experience. The CNMs are experts in low-risk, uncomplicated prenatal care and birth. We view birth as a normal process. Most labors are uncomplicated and are attended by midwives. The Ob/Gyn physicians care for high-risk patients and also provide backup support to the midwives in the event of emergencies.

The Midwives respect the desires and goals of each patient when considering pain management techniques, and offer breathing relaxation, intravenous pain medication, and epidurals. If your labor is uncomplicated, you may walk the halls as desired, with only periodic fetal heart rate monitoring. We welcome patients' birth plans and work with individuals to devise a plan that will suit their needs within our setting. Our goal is to allow each patient to have a safe and satisfying birth experience. We believe that providing a combination of midwifery and physician care will make this goal a daily reality.

We are dedicated to providing the best possible care for mothers and babies.
