Ombudsman
An ombudsman (English plural: ombudsmans or ombudsmen) is an official, usually (but not always) appointed by the government or by parliament, who is charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints reported by individual citizens.
The Army has established the Ombudsman Program which is staffed here at For Hood by experienced military and civil service retirees who function as Soldier-Family Advocates in support of the Warrior in Transition Program.
The Ombudsman serves as an advocate to resolve issues that the Soldier or Family Member has been unable to resolve through normal channels, many of which are complex or overwhelming. Issues include, but are not limited to: health care, physical disability processing, Reserve Component medical retention, transition to the Veterans Administration, and administrative related issues.
The Ombudsman is intended as a Soldier resource and not as a means of circumventing the chain of command. They also work closely with the MEDCOM Medical Action Group (MAG) to assist with issues that come through the Army-wide Wounded Soldier and Family Hotline.
In every case, the Ombudsman is an objective and impartial advocate who will attempt to provide thorough, expedient and effective resolution to inquiries, or link the Soldier or Family Member to the appropriate subject matter expert.
