Construction starts Oct. 24 for a new, North Post access control point on Fort Belvoir.

Access along Meade Road, Constitution Road, and Black Road on North Post will be closed to through traffic and the construction is expected to last about 16 months.

As Belvoir MWR’s annual Oktoberfest ends this year, drivers around Belvoir will notice big changes to their commutes to and from Belvoir.

At 9 p.m. Sunday, VDOT officials will close Pence Gate for six weeks, to continue with the agency’s Route 1 Widening Project in the area of Pence Gate.

Fort Belvoir professionals from all backgrounds are invited to participate in the Partners in Education program to support the education and career goals of students in Fort Belvoir’s feeder schools. The schools include Fort Belvoir Elementary School campus, Whitman Middle School and Mount Vernon High School.

Wendy O’Sullivan, Fort Belvoir school liaison officer, said they are especially needed at Mount Vernon High.

At a recent community meeting involving Fairfax County Public Schools, Fort Belvoir residents and garrison staff, there were a number of questions about the status of Meeres Gate and whether or not it would be open to accommodate traffic associated with Fort Belvoir Elementary School. Meeres Gate is no longer safe to use because of the speed and volume of traffic along Jeff Todd Way. Additionally, the gate does not comply with Defense Department standards for force protection and anti-terrorism measures in place at all of Belvoir’s other access control points.
