Command Sergeant Major Sam K. Young assumed the duties of Command Sergeant Major at First Army October 18, 2013, following his tour of duty as Command Sergeant Major for the U.S. Army Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

CSM Young entered the Army in May 1986. He completed Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Okla.

CSM Young’s assignments include gunner, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, Fort Drum, N.Y.; section chief, 6th Battalion, 8th Field Artillery, Fort Ord, Calif.; section chief, 1st Battalion, 4th Field Artillery, Camp Pelham, Korea; gunnery sergeant, 1st Battalion, 39th Airborne Field Artillery, Fort Bragg, N.C.; platoon sergeant, 1st Battalion, 321st Airborne Field Artillery, Fort Bragg, N.C.; platoon sergeant, 1st Battalion 10th Field Artillery, Fort Benning, Ga.; observer controller, Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, La.; first sergeant, 1st Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Polk; first sergeant, 5th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery, Fort Polk; senior FS observer controller, Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk; command sergeant major. 3rd Battalion, 6th Field Artillery, Fort Drum, N.Y.; command sergeant major for 1st Battalion, 78th Field Artillery and command sergeant major for the 75th Fires Brigade, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

His deployments include: Operation Golden Pheasant in Honduras; Operation Just Cause in Panama; Operation Desert Thunder in Kuwait; Operation Iraqi Freedom I and Operation Iraqi Freedom 07-08.

CSM Young is a graduate of every NCOES school from Warrior Leader Course to the Sergeants Major Course (Class #56). He is also a graduate of the Force Management Course, the First Sergeant Course, Airborne School, Jumpmaster School, Air Assault School, Master Fitness School, Combat Lifesaver and NBC School.
