Navy's NYC Fleet Week Ships Prove Efficiency of Improved Bill Pay Process — Last month, ships participating in the 28th annual New York City Fleet Week 2016 employed the new fleet-wide process designed to simplify the way in which the Navy works with husbanding service providers (HSP) to procure and pay for services. Participating ships included USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), and USS Shamal (PC 13).
Rota's New Air Tower Officially Opens — Historically the United States and Spanish air operations have been conducted separately from two different locations along Naval Station Rota's flight line. That changed June 10, as Rota's new air traffic control tower officially opened. The new tower brings U.S. and Spanish air operations underneath one roof, facilitating joint coordination and cooperation.
Oceanographer of the Navy Honored by University of California for Contributions to Naval Oceanography — Oceanographer of the Navy and Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet was honored during an award ceremony held June 4 at the University of California San Diego's (UCSD) RIMAC Arena. Gallaudet, a UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumnus, was honored for his career contributions to naval oceanography.
Admiral Howard Takes the Helm at JFC Naples — U.S. Navy Admiral Michelle Howard took command of Allied Joint Force Command Naples and U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa during a ceremony held at the JFC Naples headquarters, June 7, 2016. Howard, the 29th commander of JFC Naples, assumed command from U.S. Navy Admiral Mark Ferguson, who is slated to retire from the Navy. Howard previously served as the 38th Vice Chief of Naval Operations.
NRL Seawater Carbon Capture Process Receives US Patent — The Electrolytic Cation Exchange Module (E-CEM), developed at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), provides the Navy the capability to produce raw materials necessary to develop synthetic fuel stock at sea or in remote locations. The NRL, Material Science and Technology Division, has been granted the first U.S. patent for a method to simultaneously extract carbon dioxide and hydrogen from seawater. This single process provides all the raw materials necessary for the production of synthetic liquid hydrocarbon fuels.
Navy's Newest Oceanographic Vessel Sets Sail — The Navy's newest oceanographic survey vessel, USNS Maury (T-AGS 66), recently completed its maiden voyage from Pascagoula, Mississippi, where it was constructed at VT Halter Marine, to Port Everglades near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In Maury's first days at sea, the civilian survey detachment from the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) aboard performed initial testing of routine over-the-side operations as well as testing equipment unique to the ship, including underwater cameras which will be used for autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) launch and recovery in the future.
TSCHR Sailors Honor the Battle of Midway — To Capt. Edward Gettins, commanding officer Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR), the Battle of Midway will always be a major milestone in maritime heritage. Gettins commanded USS Steven W. Groves (FFG 29) from April 2009 to October 2010. Stephen W. Groves was named after Ensign Stephen W. Groves who, during the Battle of Midway, was one of six American fighter pilots who fought off a vastly superior Japanese force trying to finish off the damaged aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) in 1942. The small group of U.S. fighters was credited with shooting down 14 Japanese planes and causing six others to retreat.
USS Ronald Reagan Returns to Tip of Spear — The Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and crew began her 2016 patrol after departing Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) June 4. Ronald Reagan's crew will commence at-sea operations beginning with embarking Carrier Air Wing Five, gaining flight deck certification, loading ordnance and preparing for the Board of Inspection and Survey.
