Military Extension Internship Program
If you enjoy working with children and youth, then you might want to consider an internship through the Military Extension Internship Program.
The Department of Defense and Purdue University collaborated to provide students and recent grads like you an opportunity to experience high-quality children and youth programs on military installations around the world. Internships are available in the spring, summer and fall for both college students and recent graduates.
Program overview
During the internship, you will have the opportunity to develop professional skills in child care and youth development through practical work experience with military children, youth and families. Working as an intern in military child and youth development programs can help you develop the knowledge and skills to be competitive in your job search.
You will be required to:
- Complete an in-person orientation
- Keep a journal
- Complete a capstone report
- Work 40 hours per week
Fall and spring interns are expected to complete a 15-week program, and summer interns commit to a 10-week program. Each internship provides some level of compensation and may include room and board and stipends for basic living expenses.

If the overview has you rushing to the application site, first check that you qualify. In order to apply, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Have at least a 2.75 grade-point average, based on 4.0-scale
- Have completed four semesters of college prior to the beginning of the internship
- Be majoring in child care, youth development, recreation management or a similar field
- Be planning to pursue a career in education, child or youth programs, or family services
If that sounds like you, then you will need:
- Two recommendations
- A completed application form
- An updated college transcript
- An essay describing your background and career goals, what you can contribute to the program and what you expect to get out of the internship
Once the program office receives your application, they review it and forward it to a point of contact in one of the military services. If accepted, you'll be placed and someone at the Military Extension Internship Program will contact you with all the details.
