COLLEGE STATION -- The North Texas men’s cross country team finished in second place while the women’s squad came in 10th out of 16 teams at the Texas A&M Invitational Saturday.

Both teams got a chance to run the regional course early as Texas A&M will be hosting the NCAA South Central regional race Nov. 13.

“The men’s team looked strong,” head coach Stefanie Slekis said. “We are still running on tired legs but I was pleased to see our results. The course ran short today and we are still working on getting off the line faster. Proud of Troy‘s effort in the front of the pack and being able to say we are top three in the region is way ahead of where we were last season.”

The men’s team ran another solid race finishing with a second place finish out of 16 teams. The Mean Green defeated Missouri, Texas A&M, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, TCU and LSU in the 8,000 meter race. North Texas (72 points) only finished behind Texas who had five runners in the Top-10 to seal the victory. Senior Troy Taylor led the team with a fifth place showing at 23:41.0 and junior James Coleman was 12th with a time of 24:02.2. Senior Silvester Harrison III was 17th (24:14.1), classmate Bryce McAndrew came in 18th (24:15.2) and sophomore Mike Lowe completed the scoring in 20th (24:21.9).

The women’s team came away with a 10th place finish out of 16 teams in the 6,000 meter race. Junior Shauna Pali led the way with a 27th place finish with a time of 21:27.0. Senior Magdalena Escobar came in 39th at 21:47.1. Sophomore Christina Moralez finished 75th at (22:55.3), senior Laura Cortez was 76th (22:58.3) and classmate Yvette Hernandez placed 78th (23:01.1).

“It was a rough day but a good experience for the women’s team,” Stefanie Slekis said. “We didn’t run a 6k race until the regional meet last year so this is a good starting point for the team to get better. It will be a good wakeup call for the women’s team.”
