FORT WORTH -- The North Texas track and field team came through with a lot of solid finishes at the first outdoor meet of the season at the TCU Invitational Friday.
The Mean Green combined to bring home one first place finish, two third place finishes and 18 top-10s.
“It was a fantastic start to the outdoor season competing against teams that just returned members of their team from the NCAA indoor Championships,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “Our upperclassmen set the bar high today. Chastity Stewart returned for her final season and was just .02 off her lifetime best in her first race since 2015 outdoor NCAA regionals. Freshman Justin Joe continues his promising inaugural year.”
On day one, sophomore Kevone Kennedy took home seventh in the men’s discus after a throw of 48.88 meters (160-04 feet). Kennedy set a new personal record with another seventh place finish in the men’s hammer throw at 51.92m (170-04 feet).
On the women’s side, senior Ngozi Nweke finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 43.84 meters (143-10 feet) and 11th in the hammer throw at 45.55m (149-05 feet). Classmate Tori Clark came in sixth place in the hammer throw at 50.98 meters (167-03 feet).
Freshman Javier Lopez-Ibarra kicked off the final day with a third place finish in the men’s javelin with a throw of 59.19 meters (194-02 feet).
In windy and rainy conditions, senior Eddie Wilcox took home another first place finish in the men’s high jump at 2.05 meters. Wilcox won the title against competitors from Texas, Baylor and Harvard.
“Eddie (Wilcox) continued to raise the bar after earning first place and will have another chance at conference greatness,” added Sheffield.
In the women’s long jump, senior Mona Landry finished sixth with a jump of 5.65 meters (18-6.50 feet). Clark finished 12th in the women’s shot put with a throw of 13.31m.
Senior Dominique Drayden came in sixth with a jump of 6.88 meters (22-7.00 feet) in the men’s high jump. Sophomore Chelsea Classo finished fourth in the women’s triple jump at 11.97 meters (39-3.25 feet).
Senior Chastity Stewart was third in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.45 seconds. Stewart was competing for the first time this season and came away with the podium finish.
In the men’s 110m hurdles, sophomore Tevaun Scallion finished 10th with a time of 15.11 seconds and freshman Jared Bailey-Sampson was 12th at 15.26 seconds.
North Texas had three sprinters finish in the top-15 in the women’s 100 meter dash with Landry coming in 9th at 11.83 seconds. Sophomore Siara Obasuyi was 10th with a time of 11.90 and senior Nadiyah El-Amin finished 12th at 11.94.
Freshman Justin Joe finished seventh in a stacked field that included one of the nation’s fastest sprinters in TCU’s Ronnie Baker. Joe held his own with a time of 10.60 seconds.
Sophomore Lafiel Smith was seventh in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.60. In the women’s 200-meter dash, El-Amin came in 12th place with a time of 24.57 and Stewart was 13th at 24.63.
The Mean Green put their mark in the men’s 200-meter dash placing seven runners in the top-15 with junior Collin Heard touching in fourth with a time of 21.54. Joe earned his second top-10 of the meet with a sixth place finish at 21.58. Classmate James Cole was seventh (21.60) and junior Jamison Justice was eighth (21.65).
In the final event of the day, the North Texas men’s 4x400-meter relay team finished third with a time of 3:22.37.
“The TCU collegiate invitational was a good jump off for our team,” Sheffield said. “We’ll look to build upon the confidence from such a good start.”
