Marginas Records 2,000th Kill In Win Over Prairie View

DENTON (10/14/03) -- Corina Marginas led the North Texas volleyball team (15-10) to a 3-1 (30-18, 30-23, 25-30, 30-15) victory over Prairie View A&M (13-7) Tuesday night, smashing a match-high 27 kills that gave her 2,010 for her career and made her the first player in school history to record 2,000 or more kills in a career.

The match marked the eighth time this season she has posted at least 20 kills in a match. She also finished with 11 digs for her 16th double-double this year. With North Texas trailing 17-21 in the third game, Marginas received a pass from Kristin Sheppard and put it down for her 2,000th kill. Sheppard finished the outing with a match-high 51 assists, pushing her career assists total to 3,861 and leaving her just 29 shy of overtaking Michelle Dressel (1992-95) as North Texas' all-time leader in the stat.

Marginas was one of three North Texas players to record double-figure kills, joined by Brittney Gregory and Jill Ruskowski with 11 and 10, respectively.

The Mean Green hit .294 for the entire match and served home 12 aces, tying its season high. Gregory tied her season-high from the line with five aces and was one of four Mean Green players to post at least two aces in the match. Anne Pope played strong at the net, tallying three solo blocks to lead North Texas to nine total blocks. PVAMU hit just .136 and recorded five blocks.

The Mean Green hit at least .300 in each game it won, but posted a .100 attack percentage in a third-game setback. The Panthers posted their highest hitting percentage in the third game at .419, but failed to hit over .081 in the other three games. The Mean Green posted double-digit victories in the first and last games.

PVAMU was led by Jonette Ozen with 16 kills and was followed by Mary Reese with 13. Reese posted a double-double with 16 digs as well.

The match was the final non-conference contest of the regular season for the Mean Green, which continues Sun Belt Conference play on Friday at Florida International. The Mean Green's match with the Golden Panthers is set to get underway at 6 p.m.
