Focused Volleyball Team Hopes To Keep Rolling In Spring Competition

DENTON, Texas - Head coach Ken Murzcek and his North Texas volleyball team were the only ones not surprised by last weekend's 3-1 mark in the opening week of spring competition. Just months into his tenure, the first-year coach has raised expectations and a few eyebrows.

The Mean Green made short work of host UT Arlington, UT San Antonio and Conference USA's Houston. The only loss of the weekend came to Oklahoma, which is coming off a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

On Saturday at SMU, the Mean Green hopes to prove that outing was no fluke with another Metroplex showdown. North Texas will also take on TCU on April 17 and will host UT Arlington on April 22 at 4 p.m.

A new attitude and work ethic at the Mean Green Volleyball Center has yielded a fresh defensive philosophy and a belief that NT can compete with the nation's best. Senior outside hitter Amy Huddleston said the squad has already set its sights on taking the Mean Green back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995.

Huddleston, one of four seniors on the squad, is expected to contend for All-Sun Belt honors this season after piling up over 400 kills in 2009.
