North Texas Game Notes

Coming off a signature come from behind win over Ball State, the North Texas football team hits the road to face the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday morning in Athens.   North Texas has its best start to a season since 1994 with a 2-1 record.

The Mean Green came from behind to knock off Ball State 34-27 and now faces its biggest test of the season at No. 9/10 Georgia. The game is televised on SEC TV and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network. Kickoff is set for 11:21 a.m.

The Bulldogs had the week off after a 41-30 win at home against South Carolina. The game with No. 9/10 Georgia this week will be the 13th time in 14 years that North Texas has faced a team ranked in the top 10. Since 2000, the Mean Green has faced a top 10 opponent every year except 2010.

Dan McCarney is the fastest coach to win 11 games at North Texas since Corky Nelson in 1984. McCarney has also guided North Texas to a perfect 2-0 start at home for the first time since the 2003 season.

North Texas has forced the most turnovers in the nation with 11 through three games. The seven forced fumbles also lead the nation. In the Dan McCarney era the Mean Green is now a +15 in turnover margin.

North Texas ranks second in the nation in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score just 50 percent of the time inside the Mean Green 20-yard line. The three North Texas opponents have eight trips inside the 20 and have scored three touchdowns and one field goal.

A win over Georgia would give North Texas its best start to a season at 3-1 since 1989. North Texas has just one win over a ranked team in school history in 45 tries. The lone win came in 1974 over No. 20 San Diego State.

The Mean Green offense through three games has piled up 1,395 yards of total offense, which is the most through the first three games of the season since 1951. In two of the three games the Mean Green has topped 500-yards of total offense, which is the first time since 1983 that North Texas has had 500-yards of total offense in two of the first three games.
