2015-2016 Laptop System Requirements & Recommended Software for the Interior Design Program

System Requirements:
The UNT Interior Design Program is proud to make use of the most current technology to better prepare students for the professional design career. In order to maximize it, we require a laptop computer for students at the start of their junior level classes. The software programs we use demand more computing power, RAM and graphic capabilities (video cards), because the advanced software that we use changes and updates continuously with a faster manner. In this regard, you may approach to get a laptop with higher performance.

This information is to help students in the UNT ID program understand the laptop system requirements. Among many design software programs recommended by the program, Revit software demands higher system requirements. Obtaining a laptop with the system requirements for Revit is critical to avoid technical hassles.

For your reference, the College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) labs are updating AutoCAD 2016 and Revit 2016 during summer 2015 with a Microsoft Windows7 64-bit Operating System.

You can find useful information regarding Autodesk products from the following links. Especially you make sure your laptop meets System requirements for Autodesk Revit 2016 which can be found from System Requirements on Autodesk website link below.

Autodesk: www.autodesk.com/
System Requirements: knowledge.autodesk.com/support/system-requirements
Education Community Free Software: www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/all

Use of Macs:
Some of the software used in engineering is incompatible with the Apple Macintosh Operating System (OS) and Mac versions of the software are not available. Revit and AutoCAD operating on Mac OS were released in late 2011 though the AutoCAD course in the UNT ID program, which uses these programs on Windows OS only, NOT on Mac OS. Since AutoCAD has long been used on Windows OS in the design industry, operating the program on Windows OS is pervasive and more beneficial to students. Due to the fact that the interfaces on Windows OS and Mac OS are significantly different, learning those programs on Mac OS is fully the student’s responsibility.

It does not mean you need a PC only for Revit and AutoCAD. If you have a Mac PC dual platform, you can run them on a Windows OS.

Free Student Copies of AutoCAD and Revit:
Autodesk website provides free software downloads for students. It includes educational versions of AutoCAD, Revit, etc. Please be aware that CVAD labs are running AutoCAD 2016 (Not AutoCAD Architecture 2016) and Revit 2016 from Fall 2015 with Windows7 64-bit operating system. Please check the Interior Design Blog (untintdes.blogspot.com/) occasionally for updated information.

In order to get the free software downloads, go to Autodesk website. Under Products, click Students downloads. It will direct you to Education Community Free Software. Or simply click the link provided above.

Recommended Software for the UNT ID Program:
• Autodesk AutoCAD (Not AutoCAD Architecture): Junior year, first semester (Free download available from Autodesk website)
• Autodesk Revit: Junior year, first semester (Free download available from Autodesk website)
• SketchUp: Junior year, first semester (Free download available from Google website; SketchUp Pro is for charge)
Microsoft Office: including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign are useful in design

UNT Bookstore may offer software programs to students with a discounted price. Please visit the bookstore website at unt.bncollege.com

Optional Equipment:
External Hard Drive/Flash Drive: Students should diligently save their work and keep at least 2 backups in a separate location from their laptops. In this regard, external hard drives, 1 GB (recommended as minimum capacity) USB flash drives, or combination of both is recommended to make at least 2 separate backups and transfer files between computers. You may use a flash drive to turn in assignments and others for backups. Importance of backups cannot be over-emphasized. Note: Lost or damaged files of your work are not acceptable excuses for missing assignments.
External Mouse: Operating AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUP using a touchpad is cumbersome. You are recommended to use a mouse for efficiency.
Printer: Although there are printers available in the CVAD lab, you may elect to have a printer at home. Some of our assignments are in 11x17 format, so a printer that will print up to 11x17 is useful.

What is Revit?
Revit is a full 3D Building Information Modeling program, or parametric Computer-Aided Design program, which allows the user to design, create, and publish contract documents to clients, consultants, and construction management teams in the field. The term “parametric” refers to the process of constructing a virtual building manifested in a 3D computer model where each component is created once thus providing bi-directional manipulation that occurs instantly and universally.

Revit produces a reliable digital representation of the building available for design decision making, design scope, scheduling, high-quality construction document production, and cost estimates. Having the ability to keep information up-to-date and accessible in an integrated digital environment gives students a clear vision of their projects, as well as the ability to make informed decisions faster. Revit can be applied across the spectrum of architectural and interior design: schematic design, design development, construction document, building analysis, visualization, etc.

The 3D visualization capabilities of Revit benefits students in understanding how spaces are put together. Revit allows students to view their designs in 3D, enabling them to clearly identify and solve design problems in the early stage of the design process.

Autodesk has developed three versions of Revit: Revit Architecture for architects and building designers, Revit Structure for structural engineers, and Revit MEP for mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers.

Border Crossings Project

UNT Sophomore Interior Design Class of 2017 created the Border Crossings Project consisted of an international project where the sophomore interior design team was able communicate with different universities from all over the world (Dundee, Ljubljana, and Amsterdam). They created a sculpture with the other countries using a website created for correspondence and video chat sessions. The sculpture revolved around the concept of interconnectivity.

Their last contribution was a reactionary video to the sculpture that they had created with the other countries. Their crew was inspired by the reading, Eyes of the Skin by Juhani Pallasmaa. They incorporated different languages to show how different cultures can come together to create meaningful artwork and used fire to demonstrate how evanescent visual products can be.
