The Lone Star Rail District (LSRD), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and TxDOT, is proposing a regional passenger rail service connecting communities along the I-35 corridor between the metropolitan areas of Austin and San Antonio. 

As envisioned, the Lone Star Regional Rail Project would span approximately 120 miles across Williamson, Travis, Bastrop, Hays, Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe and Bexar counties. Based upon previous studies, the purpose of the proposed project is to improve mobility, accessibility, transportation reliability, modal choice, safety and facilitate economic development along the I-35 corridor in central and south Texas.

This project, as well as the Dallas-Houston High-Speed Rail project, the Dallas-Fort Worth Core Express Project and the Texas-Oklahoma Passenger Rail Study presents an innovative opportunity for the state given continued population growth and the increasing congestion on highways and at major airports – as part of an interconnected and multimodal transportation system vision.

Current Status

LSRD is launching the federal environmental process on the regional passenger rail project that will connect the Austin and San Antonio metro areas and a Notice of Intent (NOI) will be initiated. This will mark the beginning of the process that will study the feasibility and impacts, and gather public input, of the proposed passenger rail line.
