I couldn't even do 5th grade math when I was in 5th grade. I have dyslexia and plus... my brain doesn't like math. It like English and literature. My teachers passed me barely based on my effort alone. I tried so hard. When I got to high school, my teacher, who we called Doc, because he had a doctorate O.o, though why he was teaching at my crappy school I don't know. He helped me a lot. He graded my work backwards if I got something wrong and gave me points if the math was right but the answer was wrong. In college I took an entrance exam and aced out of English, they just gave me all my English credits except one because I got a perfect score. In math however, they said if I'd gotten even one less point that I'd be at special Ed level in math. xD The math teacher I got assigned to was great and I was doing math well for the first time ever. Unfortunately, I got too sick to continue my college education and am disabled from it. So, I don't really need math. My daughter will tease me sometimes with math, she thinks it's hilarious that I can't do it. I let her because it helps her learn by coming up with math questions, then having to figure them out so she can make fun of my inability to do it. (I check her work with a calculator to make sure her gloating is justified. )

What is so annoying is helping the kids and the teacher marks it incorrect even if the answer is correct because I show them the way that I had learned. But I guess now they have added several more steps to get to the same conclusion. I hate wasting time.

+Angela Renee I feel the same way - but even when I was in school I hated "the long way" (as +Sassy Sabrina put it) - I often forgot to jot down the intermediate steps, because I felt it was easier doing everything in the head, than writing everything down.

My son is a 4th grader (in the danish school system) - I haven't gotten any word from the teachers yet, but maybe they don't care too much for how the results come about - they often get homework in "eMat" (eMath), where they use the computer on a website - there's no place to write anything down but the result.

Also - I'm convinced teaching the kids to do the math in their heads is far more important than teaching them to depend on pen and paper (or worse - their calculator app on the phone)...

Yeah, I suck at math. It took about 10 semesters of my academic life to finally get algebra. Statistics was better to get a grasp of for me.

Das ist wie mit Sprachen. Man muss immer wieder üben und praktizieren. Wenn man das nicht tut, vergisst man es leider und muss wieder neu üben. So geht es auch mit Mathe. Mathe arbeitet auch mit Begriffen und Regeln wie eine Sprache. Leider muss es immer geübt werden. Schade.

I'm the Director of the Tutorial Program at my church, a Comp. Sci Major and an ex-8th grade AP math teacher. And I still say math is a challenge for most students because we go about it the wrong way. I have a milder form of dyslexia and have written/spoken number inversion from time to time. It took a MATH 5 community college teacher to start me on a path and give me the tools to put in the math kit in my brain, before I succeeded.  Not just a bunch of shortcuts and memorization (which works great if you have a keen memory for math - I don't) but an understanding of how, and what, when.  Also less emphasis on speed and more on technique , number sense and understanding. It could take 10 more minutes, but the goal is for all the students to "get it" and consistently reproduce their method. So when I taught math, I let them teach themselves the math THEY wanted to know too. My unit "Journey to Equatia" helped students explore the math they needed for modern living.  And by golly if they are not having fun, running around, engaged with the subject ...how do you expect them to learn anything?

I actually did better then I would have done in 5th grade. The Multiplication one I would have got wrong because for some reason I thought 9*6 was 56 not 54. Which was just a silly brain fart. Once I realized the mistake I got it right.

I'm in 5th grade. This is standard easy math. I'm a advanced student in a special soar class for people who exceed I was tested in kindergarten and I have been in my whole school life. I do need a little help on finding common denominators. Though I have all A's on my progress report and report card. My 2nd period math teacher gave me 7th grade work. I did pretty good on it. Yay. I'm smart!
