Weigh-In-Motion Virtual Demonstration Project

The objective of Demonstration Project (DP) 121 was to provide users of WIM technology with “virtual demonstrations” of commercially available hardware/software and technical education modules consisting of a comprehensive Internet site, parallel CD-ROM, and companion handbook.  Through on-line technology demonstrations (reproduced on the companion CD-ROM for speedier download), DP 121 educated participants on the operational requirements and features of various WIM technologies.  Through these web-based education modules, DP 121 educated participants on other issues associated with WIM technology such as: (a) installation requirements/costs, (b) site-selection criteria, (c) sources of error and their affect on system performance, (d) methods of optimizing performance during site selection/preparation/installation, (e) integrating WIM systems with other technologies, (f) differing WIM technology options, (g) the advantages and disadvantages of portable and in-ground WIM systems, (h) typical maintenance requirements, (i) the tradeoffs between low- and high-speed WIM systems, (j) data collection analysis tools for planning purposes, (k) best practices to ensure WIM data quality, and (l) data editing procedures and national standards.
