“I think it's unfortunate that now for two and a half years the only working people - the only working people - in America who have received a freeze or decrease or have contributed to solving the debt crisis which confronts us, with which the Gentleman and I agree, are federal workers. I’m not talking about Members of Congress. I'm not talking about the President or the Vice President. The President doesn't get a COLA adjustment, obviously. But it's a cost of living adjustment, and I will say to my friend that I have worked over the last 20 years with his counterparts, either in the majority or minority to ensure we made the distinction so people understood and didn't demagogue that issue. I regret that we are doing so here again.”
Speech: Thursday, Feb 7, 2013
"Good morning, and thank you for this opportunity to kick off what promises to be an interesting and informative day of discussions about the future of manufacturing in our country.

“I am honored to be here to mark this day with you and usher in another Congress where I know the Congressional Black Caucus will have a significant and positive impact. For over forty years, the CBC has been a moral voice in the democratic caucus as well as the conscience of the Congress. By promoting an agenda of middle-class opportunities for traditionally under-represented communities that have historically had to contend with poverty, discrimination, and disenfranchisement, the CBC is making sure that the promise of the American dream is accessible to all our people.

“With millions still out of work and families struggling to make ends meet, Republicans are responding by voting to take away critical health care protections. Polls show a clear majority of Americans want Congress to move on from the health care issue and spend time focusing on creating jobs and moving our economic recovery forward.
Op-Ed: Friday, Jan 18, 2013
Four years ago, President Obama took office against a backdrop of severe job losses, an auto industry on the brink of collapse and a housing market shaken by a foreclosure crisis. The very foundations of the American Dream appeared to be faltering. As he stood to address an anxious nation, our new president declared that “the state of our economy calls for action, bold and swift.”

Op-Ed: Thursday, Sep 20, 2012
With Congress set to go home this week to focus on the upcoming election, Republicans in control of the House are leaving behind a long list of unfinished business. After two years in charge, House Republicans have not taken action on comprehensive jobs legislation to get Americans back to work, they have not prevented a tax increase on middle-class families, they have not worked to enact a big and balanced plan to reduce the deficit and turn off the sequester, and they have not passed major legislation, including a farm bill, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, or postal reform. Having racked up a dismal record as the “Do Nothing Republican Congress,” their failure even to try addressing the serious challenges we face as a nation has been strikingly disappointing.

Over the past several weeks Republicans have increasingly shown their support of the sequester, which is due to take effect in just over two weeks.
Issue Report: Wednesday, Feb 6, 2013
As the March 1st deadline quickly approaches, there is still time to stop the automatic spending cuts, known as sequestration, from occurring. Unfortunately, many Republicans have indicated that they are willing to let sequestration happen in spite of the harmful impact it will have on the economy, our national defense, and on working Americans:
Issue Report: Tuesday, Jan 15, 2013
Recently, a growing number of Republicans have been threatening to either hold the debt ceiling hostage during fiscal negotiations or force a government shutdown by refusing to fund regular agency appropriations. Instead of attempting to make either of these reckless moves, which are sure to wreak havoc on our economy for the sake of scoring political points, Republicans should immediately work with President Obama to ensure the continued recovery of our economy. As seen in 2011, treating the debt ceiling as a bargaining chip would be dangerous, sowing uncertainty and tempting another downgrade of our credit. And as was the case in 1995 and 1996, a government shutdown would bring turmoil to all sectors of the economy. Republicans should not bet the fiscal stability and economic wellbeing of our country in their attempt to gain political points.
