Current Situation
The parliament's approval of a new government in May marked a new chapter for Haiti. The swearing-in of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and his cabinet ended the political deadlock in place for most of the last year. In the Field
USIP works to promote reconciliation and reconstruction in Haiti through on-the-ground training in at-risk communities and nationwide legal reform.
- USIP conducts training in conflict resolution with community leaders in Haiti in partnership with the National Democratic Institute.
- USIP has teamed up with Digital Democracy to train women activists in Haiti to monitor and report violence in their communities.
- USIP is supporting Haiti's effort to reform its legal codes utilizing USIP's Model Codes for Post-Conflict Justice.
- USIP supported Ushahidi, Inc.'s efforts to provide crisis mapping during post-conflict relief and reconstruction.
Events
USIP hosts the only regular public forums in Washington, DC on current isues in Haiti. These panel discussions and roundtables bring together U.S. and Haitian officials as well as experts, practitioners, and interested members of the public to discuss developments in Haiti and in U.S.-Haitian relations.

Photo Exhibition: The following photographs were featured in an exhibition at USIP. The images were taken by Haitian women with low-cost digital cameras and and depict their lives in the tent encampments around Port-au-Prince in the months following the January 2010 earthquake. These women were trained by Digital Democracy on how to utilize photography, blogging, and other forms of media to highlight issues in their communities and advocate for policy change.
