books | conferences | journal articles | patents | reports | standards | theses and dissertations

How to Find Books
Library Catalog • search by author, title, subject, ISBN, etc.
• limit to only certain types of material, e.g. print or electronic books, in Advanced Search with the "Format" pulldown
• request to borrow the book with the "Request Item" link (when logged in with a LANL cryptocard)


The Library Catalog will tell you where a book is located and if it's checked out, or provide the online URL.

If you don't find a specific book in the Library, you can suggest the Library purchase it, request it through InterLibrary Loan, or purchase your own copy (suggested external sources).

How to Find Conferences
ISI Web of Knowledge - searches 5 databases, all areas of science and technology • find conference papers, and in Web of Science's ISI Proceedings, also get citation counts.
Primo - searches multiple resources, all areas of science and technology

• find conference papers

Library Catalog

• find conference proceedings, both print and electronic (not individual papers)
• search by conference title, city and year held; sponsor (use author index), subject, ISBN, etc.

How to Find Journal Articles

For a specific journal article for which you have a reference

Journals page

• journal-title level
• covers e-journals only
• lists by subject categories
Library Catalog


• journal-title level; richer indexing than the Journals web page
includes print journal holdings

For journal articles on a topic ISI Web of Knowledge - searches 5 databases: Web of Science citation databases for Science, Social Science, and Proceedings; BIOSIS, and Inspec • multi-database searching with refine results, output, etc.

Primo - searches multiple resources, all areas of science and technology • search results can be narrowed by year, format, and other characteristics
• largest database
Databases page. Most of these databases index journal literature. Browse by subject categories to find an appropriate database.  

Find journals covering the topic through the Journals page subject categories, or through the Library Catalog (use Advanced Search and Apply limits > Format > Journal)

How to Find Reports
Library Catalog



• find report numbers with a Report Number Browse search
• covers all LA, many LA-UR reports
• records may have only brief information, such as report number, title and date
• not all reports in the library are listed

Los Alamos Authors • covers LA-URs; data comes from SAFE-1; mid-1970s to present.

Energy Citations Database (1948- )

• covers science and technology research
• often has links to full-text

Primo

• includes Library Catalog and Energy Citations Database records


To obtain a copy of a technical report, if there is not a link to an electronic version, email Report library staff or call 667-5809. The Library's collection of 1.5 million reports is not all cataloged but staff can find a report for you.

For most commercial, industrial and DOD-adopted standards IHS Standards Expert
• full-text pdf
• search document number, title, abstract or full text
For IEEE standards IEEE Xplore

• full-text pdf
• find by keyword, std. number or industry
