Capacity Building through Technical Assistance

The U.S. Census Bureau provides both short- and long-term technical assistance on a wide variety of topics related to censuses, surveys, and information systems. Over the past six decades, the U.S. Census Bureau has worked in over 100 countries, and as such is uniquely endowed with experience in every major region of the world. More than 10,000 individuals from developing countries have participated in its training programs.

Demographic and Socioeconomic Analysis

High-quality analysis of population and economic data is vital for evidence-based decision making at all stages of a country’s development. Combining exceptional access to international data with the expertise of its staff, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts applied research on a range of demographic, economic, and health issues. U.S. Census Bureau experts work on a diverse spectrum of ongoing and short-term projects, including:

• The International Data Base (IDB)
• Country profiles on a range of socioeconomic issues
• Analytical reports on topics such as HIV/AIDS and aging
• Government consultations, training seminars, and modeling

Global Population Mapping and Spatial Analysis

The U.S. Census Bureau has an innovative program to develop global, subnational population data and maps for use in international humanitarian relief and disaster planning. Our products provide current data on global population patterns.

• Demographic and map base for the Global LandScan gridded population map
• Overseas technical assistance

International Collection of the U.S. Census Bureau Library

The U.S. Census Bureau Library acquires and maintains a repository of statistical information and methodological materials from foreign countries, international organizations, and other sources in order to support the Census Bureau and other agencies. Many materials in the International Collection are obtained through official exchanges between the Census Bureau and statistical offices worldwide.

The Census Bureau Library is open to the public.
