Demographic and Socioeconomic Analysis

The U.S. Census Bureau experts work on a diverse spectrum of ongoing and short-term projects, including:
  • The International Data Base (IDB)
  • The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base
  • Country profiles on a range of socioeconomic issues
  • Analytical reports on topics such as HIV/AIDS and aging
  • Government consultations, training seminars, and modeling

The International Data Base (IDB) is a series of estimates and projections that provide a consistent set of demographic indicators, including population size and growth, mortality, fertility, and net migration, for more than 200 countries and areas. The IDB is updated twice each year with the addition of new data for 20 to 30 countries. It is widely used by policymakers and researchers, and is often cited by global news sources, websites, and other reports on population trends.

The online HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base is an international compilation of HIV prevalence and incidence data resources from various sources for countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Oceania. The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base is designed to provide users with information on HIV/AIDS and is helpful as both a reference tool and a resource for policy, research, and evaluation.

Thematic reports on critical topics such as HIV/AIDS and aging are regularly developed and published by the Census Bureau. These projects are supported by U.S. and international agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Census Bureau experts engage in specialized research and consultancy projects tailored to data user and sponsor needs. Activities include:
  • Report on fertility trends in Central America
  • Comprehensive analytical report on aging trends for the world
  • Subnational population projections for China, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and cities around the world
  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates for several island economies
  • Advanced modeling of HIV/AIDS global incidence and prevalence and the demographic impact
  • Estimation of maternal mortality from survey data in the Philippines
  • Complete socioeconomic profiles of several Asian countries
  • Consultancy with a government ministry to determine demographic data needs and existing capacities
  • Research on socioeconomic effects of banking reform in China
  • Assessment of the impact of the 2004 tsunami on Indonesia
  • Research project on the role and status of women in the world
  • Assessment of census coverage and data quality for several countries
  • Research on language, ethnicity, and literacy trends
  • Analysis of Pakistan’s diaspora

The U.S. Census Bureau’s international area is actively engaged in contract work for sponsors. We leverage our expertise in international demographic and economic affairs to produce focused reports on sponsors’ individual areas of interest.
