Welcome to the GA/AL District
Fort Benning Schools

We are off to an exciting start with the implementation of new curriculum materials supporting our updated PK-8 social studies and math content standards.  This follows a successful implementation of PK-8 English/Reading/Language Arts (ELA) materials last year.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the new PK-2 math series: Everyday Mathematics. This comprehensive program was developed as the University of Chicago School Mathematics Projects and is published by Wright Group/McGraw-Hill.  In order to prepare our students for the 21st century students need a mathematics curriculum that is rigorous, balanced and:

  • Emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills;
  • Explores a broad mathematics spectrum, not just basic arithmetic
  • Is based on how children learn and what they’re interested in while preparing them for their future mathematical needs.

The program helps children build and maintain basic skills, including automatic fact recall, and uses everyday real-world problems and situations to nurture and develop higher-order and critical-thinking skills.

One difference you may note is that the mathematical content is taught in a repeated fashion, beginning with concrete experiences.  Students are expected to master a variety of mathematical skills and concepts, but not the first time they are introduced.  Everyday Math allows students to revisit these skills and concepts in varied contexts, integrating new learning with previous knowledge and experiences. When newly learned concepts and skills are periodically reviewed, practiced and applied in a variety of contexts, they are better retained.
