FIPS 196 specifies unilateral and mutual challenge-response protocols for the authentication of entities in a computer system. This involves the generation and verification of digital signatures on information that includes a random number challenge.
Testing is not available for entity authentication implementations.
NIST has no current plans for modifying this FIPS, or for issuing any additional standards.
