Drugs: The Community Policing Response

The COPS Office works to support comprehensive approaches to problems of drug abuse and drug-related crime. As most visitors to this site know, the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs destroys neighborhoods, contributes to violence and victimization, and often ruins the lives of drug users and their families. The arrest and jailing of drug users and dealers alone has not eliminated the drug problem, which continues to plague the United States.

Innovative problem-solving and multidisciplinary partnerships are key to addressing the problems of drugs. The COPS Office offers a variety of resources aimed at helping law enforcement agencies apply the principles of community policing and problem-solving to drug crime problems. In addition to presenting lessons from years of experience with the COPS Methamphetamine Initiative grant program, the COPS Office has also looked in depth at street-level dealing problems and crime associated with the drug trade.

The COPS Office works with its many federal partners within the Department of Justice, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), as well as the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Their shared goal: a comprehensive approach to helping communities deal with problems of drug abuse and drug-related crime.

COPS is also proud to have worked with a variety of private organizations to produce resources on methamphetamine and other dangerous drugs. Those partners include:
