Water Quality Monitoring

Water quality is an indicator of both anthropogenic impacts and climate impacts. Both of these drivers are in a constant state of flux. Reserve stewardship staff address these pressures by engaging volunteers in monitoring water quality as a way to educate community members about trends and impacts on water quality as well as to provide a broader spatial coverage of water quality data than can be provided by the System-Wide Monitoring Program dataloggers. Many reserves have trained volunteers in gathering water quality data and have built in to the effort spot checking with data gathered by researchers. These efforts have been enormously valuable and have had direct impact on management efforts to address land based sources of coastal pollution.
