Puerto Rico Equal Access Program: Programa de Igualdad de Acceso para Puerto Rico: Recursos de Información del VIH/SIDA de la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina Workbook

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), in partnership with the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Specialized Information Services Division, developed the Programa de Igualdad de Acceso para Puerto Rico: Recursos de Información del VIH/SIDA de la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicinaworkbook.

The workbook was developed as a specialized training course for the grant recipients of the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) and Office of AIDS Research (OAR) Puerto Rico Equal Access Program (PREAP).

This PREAP training was specifically developed for the Puerto Rican Spanish language community, where ORISE trained three bilingual/bicultural instructors who conducted the training in Spanish alongside the training workbook that was adapted and translated into Spanish.

The training was carried out through a series of three workshops held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as part of the NMAC Conference that was held March 13-14, 2009. The intent was to provide participants a better understanding of NLM-specific resources and research techniques through online education.

Specifically, the training—sponsored by NMAC and the National Institutes of Health’s Office of AIDS Research (OAR)—was designed to provide valuable health information resources from the NLM and other reliable sources to increase awareness of the abundance of treatment information and educational materials that are available on the Internet.

The goal of the 2009 PREAP was to help Hispanic-serving community organizations build technological capacity with the goal of enhancing their ability to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment information for their clients and communities.

Faith- and community-based organizations located throughout Puerto Rico were invited to submit an application to receive a state-of-the-art desktop computer and a scholarship to attend the training at the Conferencia Sobre VIH: En Alianza para un Mejor Servicio.
