Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Office

Over the last 10 years of combat, we as a Corps have become more lethal, but we've also become critically dependent on fuel and batteries. This dependence puts Marine lives at risk. At the direction of the Commandant, the Expeditionary Energy Office (E2O) is working to create a lighter, faster, and more lethal force, that goes farther and stays longer on every gallon of fuel, every kilowatt of energy it requires.

Marine Corps investments in energy efficiency equipment and renewable energy systems give us greater military capability. These investments mean increased tactical and operational tempo, and reduced vulnerability during resupply. These investments save time, allowing Marines to focus more on the enemy and less on planning and executing sustainment missions. E2O is working to help Marines recognize that resource efficiency is a force multiplier that increases combat effectiveness.

4 energy efficient systems are currently Program of Record and are in use in OEF today:

• Solar Portable Alternative Communications Energy System (SPACES) (TAMCN H0011) - SPACES is a lightweight, portable, renewable energy system designed to provide power for platoon and squad size units operating in remote locations. Marines use SPACES to recharge batteries that power communications equipment like SATCOM radios, reducing the number of batteries carried on extended patrol.
• Ground Renewable Expeditionary Energy Network System (GREENS) (TAMCN A0375) - GREENS is a portable power generation system that incorporates solar panels, energy storage, and AC/DC power sources. GREENS provides an average continuous output of 300 W - enough to power a battalion combat operations center (COC). Marines also use GREENS to power HIMARS and M777 howitzers, eliminating the need to tow a 3kW generator and reducing vehicle idle time. 
• Radiant Barrier (TAMCN C0156) -  This shelter liner, designed for a Base-X 305 medium soft shelter, doubles the "r" value of the tent. Marines use radiant barriers to keep cool air in and hot air out, reducing the number of environmental control units (ECUs) required in a combat environment.
• Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lights (TAMCN C0155) - LED light sets for medium soft shelters and general purpose use are more efficient than traditional fluorescent lights. Marines light their tents with these systems in order to keep power requirements at a minimum.
