Kessler Elementary History

Fort Stewart is the home of the 3rd Infantry Division and combined to be the Army’s Premier Power Projection Platform on the Atlantic coast. It is the largest, most effective and efficient armor training base east of the Mississippi, covering 280,000 acres including parts of Liberty, Long, Tattnall, Evans and Bryans Counties in southeast Georgia. Fort Stewart’s vision is to be the world’s best installation for training and deploying Armed Forces, as well as providing the highest quality environment for soldiers to live and raise a family. In keeping with the vision Fort Stewart partnered with RCI (Residential Community Initiative) to build better housing on post for 3rd ID soldiers and their families. As a result, of this partnership, an increase in families moved on post creating the need for an additional school.

Ft. Stewart Elementary, the third of three schools located on Ft. Stewart, GA, opened its doors on August 4, 2005, with a student population of 125, and 21 teachers and support staff, Mrs. Carol Lee Kipp Caldwell served as the school’s first principal. The first through sixth grade school serviced the new Liberty Woods housing area. The school was set up in temporary modular buildings on Davis Avenue in a vacant field adjacent Diamond Elementary School while the brick and mortar school was being built. In 2007, as the completion of the school neared, the name of Fort Stewart Elementary was changed in order to honor a WWII 3rd Infantry Division Soldier and Medal of Honor recipient: Pfc. Patrick L. Kessler. When the 2007-2008 school year began, approximately fifty percent of the children who started the first year of Fort Stewart Elementary moved to the new Kessler Elementary School when redistricting took place. Kessler Elementary School was dedicated on September 12, 2007, with two of PFC Kessler’s relatives attending the ceremony. KES now supports a student population of 502 in Pre-K through Sixth grade, with 41 teachers and support staff. The school mascot, a soaring Eagle, was selected as representative of the new school’s high expectations and goals. The school slogan, “Dignity and Respect; Everyone; Everyday”, and the school colors, red, white, and blue, were descriptive of an attitude of pride and patriotism.

The home of the Eagles is a place where Education And Goals Let everyone Soar!

History of the Fort Stewart School System

The Fort Stewart Elementary School became operational in September, 1963, under the provision of Section VI, P.L., 82-874, which provides free public education for children residing on Federal property. Due to the influx of the military population with school-age dependents, another school adjacent to Bryan Village was constructed and opened in September, 1982 and was named Brittin Elementary School. Fort Stewart Elementary School was renamed Diamond Elementary School at the same time. In 1964, kindergarten was included as part of the school curriculum. In 1994 Pre-kindergarten was added. Children in grades seven through twelve attend nearby public schools in Liberty County. Diamond Elementary School is in the Fort Stewart School System (FSSS), which is part of the South Carolina/Fort Stewart district of the Department of Defense Elementary and Secondary School system (DDESS) with a seven-member advisory school board. A superintendent, assistant superintendent and administrative staff support the schools within the district.
