Housing, Active Duty Military

Command Sponsored military are eligible for on-post family housing. Average waiting time is 6-18 months. Servicemembers who are waiting for housing assignment on or off post will be in a temporary lodging allowance status (TLA) to off-set the cost of lodging if authorized. Military members who are authorized to move off post can expect to find housing within 10 days of reporting. A one month security deposit is normally required and first month rent.

Family housing is very limited; Camp Humphreys only has 148 housing units. There are 3 towers with a total of 142 units consisting of 2, 3, 4 bedroom units ranging in size from 1,600 - 1,700 square feet. We have 6 single dwelling units designated for key positions only. Each unit will have a living/dining area, kitchen, storage room, laundry room, family room, bedrooms, 2 full baths, and plenty of closets and storage space. The units will be assigned to all grades of command sponsored families assigned to Area III.

Reporting Requirements

On post, unaccompanied government quarters for E7 and above is the first choice of housing. Individuals who exceed their household goods shipment allowance will be responsible to arrange storage/shipment of any excess HHGs back to CONUS at their own expense. Exception to policy to reside off post due to excessive HHGs will not be approved.

Reporting Soldiers in the grade of E7 and above must in process with the Housing Office, T307 as soon as they arrive to determine if BOQ/SLQ is immediately available. TLA will only be approved and reimbursed if there are no rooms available.  Housing will inform you if TLA is authorized. A housing decision will be made based on type of tour, (command sponsored, joint domicile, or unaccompanied) and availability of on post housing. Members must provide copies of their orders and complete the application process. All service members will be assigned a command sponsored number prior to release of travel decision for the family and must request dependent entry through 8th PERSCOM.

Returning to CONUS -- Those returning to CONUS from overseas should check out DoD Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN)--Visit AHRN.com or ask at your local housing office to learn about this DoD program that is currently available for most installations. The program allows military members and families to:

  • Search listings and pictures of available rentals near military installations
  • Find out about shared rentals
  • List their own properties for rent to other military families
  • List their homes for sale by owner (FSBO) to other military members
  • Contact installation housing offices

AHRN is not currently available at all installations but the phased program is adding new installations every month. Check the AHRN website to see if your next assignment is an AHRN base and check out other features to assist you in your home search.

Command Sponsored Families
Only Command Sponsored Families are eligible for on-post Army Family Housing (AFH) quarters. The units are furnished and the service member (SM) is only authorized 1/2 of their JTR. The units are cable and internet access ready. Assignment policy is one bedroom per dependent based on age/sex; up to 2 pets are authorized per family, no exceptions. SM must request command sponsorship and complete the overseas screening process before command sponsored orders and dependent travel will be issued. SMs are encouraged to bring their personal property except their washer/dryer and oversized furniture (ie large entertainment units, oversized couches, German shrunks, etc.), although the government will provide furniture and appliances that can be used on a loaner basis in both off-post and on-post quarters.

Command Sponsored/Joint Domicile Families
Command Sponsored and Joint Domicile families must report to the Housing Office to in-process and complete the application process. SM must request command sponsorship and complete the overseas screen process before command sponsored orders and dependent travel will be issued. Joint Domicile requests must be submitted and approved through IMCOM-Pacific/G1. Losing installation PCS orders issued by local MPDs are not official Joint Domicile orders. Please ensure that the correct Joint Domicile orders issued by IMCOM-Pacific/G1 are received, otherwise this will affect the tour status and housing entitlements. SMs will be only be authorized overseas housing allowance with approved G1 orders, along with a monthly utility allowance. Off-post rentals are very "western style" with 1.5 to 2 full baths, combination living/dining areas, bedrooms, and minimal storage. Most of the rentals are low-rise (3 stories) and typically have minimal parking. The units have 110 voltages and are equipped with air conditioning.

Unaccompanied Grade E7 and Above
Soldiers in the grade of E7 and above serving and unaccompanied tour must in-process with the Housing Office and complete the application process. Depending on availability, SMs that can be housed in Unaccompanied Personnel Housing (UPH) quarters within 60 days of reporting will live on-post. SMs who are authorized to move off-post will receive Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) in support of the off-post rental. Authorization to reside off-post is not automatic; upon in-processing at the Housing Office, occupancy will be determined. Occupancy for their category must exceed 95% in order to be approved to collect OHA. Furniture and appliances are provided if approved to reside off-post. All the Bachelor Officer Quarters (BOQ) and SNCO billets have been renovated or were newly constructed and are furnished. Construction is on-going to improve the living conditions. Pets are not authorized in UPH, no exceptions.

Unaccompanied Military & Single Soldiers
Soldiers in the grade of E6 and below will be assigned to troop barracks. E4 and below share with another Soldier and share a bath. E5/E6 Soldiers will each have a private room and share a bath.  Approval to reside off post and collect OHA is not authorized.

Non-command Sponsored
If you are not command sponsored, do not bring your family. Those who choose to disregard this advice can expect severe personal and monetary hardships. Military who are serving an unaccompanied tour when government quarters are available will only be authorized to reside off-post if a local form 1058 is approved by their unit and the housing office. Out of pocket expenses to set up and maintain a household are costly. Soldiers who are approved to reside off post will receive OHA with dependent rate. Furniture and appliances will not be issued in support of the household, nor with TLA be authorized.
