Office of Law Enforcement and Security
Our Mission: To lead the Department's law enforcement, security, and intelligence activities by providing effective direction, oversight, guidance, and coordination.
Established in October 2001, in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Office of Law Enforcement and Security provides leadership, policy guidance, oversight and compliance to the Department's law enforcement, security and intelligence programs. The Office of Law Enforcement and Security serves as the central point of contact for the Department's law enforcement, security and intelligence programs. To accomplish its broad mission of protecting visitors, personnel and facilities, the Office of Law Enforcement and Security: (i) works closely with the Department's bureaus and outside government agencies and departments, including the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security, to protect departmental and critical infrastructure facilities, and national icons and monuments; (ii) develops law enforcement staffing models; (iii) develops and updates law enforcement and security policy; (iv) establishes consistent departmental training requirements and monitors their implementation; (v) oversees the hiring of key law enforcement and security personnel; (vi) conducts policy compliance reviews; (vii) oversees and reviews Bureau law enforcement and security budgets; and (viii) serves as the principal point of contact with the Intelligence Community. . The Office of Law Enforcement and Security also represent the Department in high-level and inter agency and inter-governmental committees and task forces that have been established to review homeland security, intelligence and counter-terrorism issues.
