Marines with 12th Marine Regiment received assault amphibious vehicle (AAV) familiarization training with members of Combat Assault Battalion Jan. 24 in the North Fuji Maneuver Area at Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji on mainland Japan.

Marines are required to complete a physical fitness test semi-annually. To score a perfect 300, any male must run three miles in under 18 minutes; perform 20 consecutive pull-ups and complete 100 crunches in two minutes (EDITOR'S NOTE: To score a perfect 300, females must run three miles in under 21 minutes; perform 70-second flexed-arm hang or eight consecutive pull-ups and complete 100 crunches in two minutes).

A 12-by-6 mile former lake bed, comprised of dry vegetation and compact sand, may seem to be useless ground. However, the Marines from Marine Mobile Air Traffic Control Team see this barren land as an opportunity to create a runway for aircraft as large as a Marine KC-130.

It's the early morning at the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting squadron when the call goes out. Intercom screaming, ear-piercing sirens blaring, Marines rush to get into place for an emergency they trained and prepared for since entering their military occupational specialty.

Some obstacles were tall, and some were short. Some required finesse and agility, while others required brute strength. However, one thing all the obstacles in the Confidence Course had in common was that they were all challenging.

Many Marines enlist soon after high school and range in age from 18 to 20. When a Marine joins later, he often has a different perspective of life.
