TITLE OF CLERKSHIP: ICU (MEDICINE & SURGERY COMBINED)
DEPARTMENT: Medicine

OBJECTIVES/DESCRIPTION OF CLERKSHIP:
Students will be responsible in taking care of both surgical and medical patients in this 20 bed combined medical surgical ICU. They will have direct responsibilities in an intern type role to manage these mixture of patients. Each clerk will be associated with a second or third year resident. In addition, they will be supervised by a full time ICU staff and fellows. The main thrust of the rotation is to present a broad range of critically ill patients to the medical student, and they will be responsible to organize pertinent data on their patients, present it at daily rounds, and organize and synthesize management plans on each of their patients. They will also be responsible for inserting invasive lines such as arterial lines, central venous lines, and Swan ganz catheters. A core curriculum of 22 lectures is presented each month. In addition, there is one critical care conference each month.
