OBJECTIVES/DESCRIPTION OF CLERKSHIP:
For junior medical students, the department offers a basic introductory clerkship of six weeks duration. The clerkship is divided evenly between obstetrics and gynecology. During the gynecology portion of the clerkship, students will be assigned to one of the two inpatient surgical services. They will have the opportunity to participate in all phases of the intraoperative and post-operative management of gynecologic patients. During their obstetric rotation, students will devote most of their time to the management of patients who are in labor. They also will participate in the assessment of antepartum patients who are hospitalized because of complications of pregnancy. In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend several antepartum and ultrasonography clinics.

For senior medical students, the department offers four-week electives including: maternal-fetal medicine, endocrine-infertility, gynecologic oncology, and gynecologic surgery. During these electives, students will be allowed to function as sub-interns. Requests for the senior specialty electives should be made directly to the department education coordinator.

Both junior and senior students will attend all regular department education conferences. These are held each morning from 0700 to 0800. Special gynecology and obstetrics conferences are held two, and three times weekly respectively. In addition, special student conferences are held four to five days of each week. Senior military medical students will be asked to participate in Physical Fitness Training and Testing with the department.
