Colonel John M. Scott was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Aviation through the United States Military Academy on May 24, 1989.


In 1990, after attending the Aviation Officer Basic Course Phase I, the Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course and Aviation Officer Basic Course Phase II, Second Lieutenant Scott was assigned to C Troop, 4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division (Light) at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. While in Alaska he served 36 months as an AH-1F "Cobra" Platoon Leader and as the Assistant Operations Officer (S-3). He took command of A Company, 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 101st Aviation Brigade in September 1994 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 1996, Captain Scott was assigned as an Attack Helicopter Observer Controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Later while stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as an Operations Research Analyst, he was selected to attend the resident U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the School for Advanced Military Studies. Upon graduation, Major Scott was assigned as the Chief of Plans for the 7th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, and then to augment U.S. Central Command as a Planner for six months. In July of 2003, he joined the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in western Iraq and for 24 months performed duties as the Executive Officer and Operations Officer of the 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry (4-3 ACR). In July 2005, Lieutenant Colonel Scott assumed command of 4-3 ACR during Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-06 to finish their combat tour in the winter of 2006. He took command of the 1st Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade "Expect No Mercy" at Fort Campbell in September 2006 and completed a deployment with Task Force No Mercy in Afghanistan in December 2008. Lieutenant Colonel Scott also served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff as an Operations Officer in the Joint Operations Directorate, Global Force Management Division. He attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) at Fort McNair, Washington D.C., prior to assuming command of U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I in South Korea July 13, 2012.


Colonel Scott is a graduate of the Aviation Officer Basic Course, Aviation Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College and the School for Advanced Military Studies.He holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a master's degree in Strategic Resources from the National Defense University (ICAF), a Master's of Science in Operations Research from Kansas State University and a Master's in Military Arts from the Command and General Staff College.


Colonel Scott's awards include the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters and Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has also earned the Combat Action Badge, Master Army Aviator Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Joint Chief of Staff Identification Badge.
