The Destination is Compassion

“I repaired a donated power generator that restored power to an orphanage. I never knew a degree in Electrical Engineering could impact lives so profoundly.”

My background in electrical engineering is usually put to work on big-picture assignments: analyzing the impact of actions or reviewing plans for feasibility. When I got to Haiti, the need for that kind of thinking and planning was still a little bit down the road. What they needed right away was practical solutions to life-altering problems. So, instead of doing a 30,000-foot review of the power grid, I fixed a generator for an orphanage.

Repairing that donated generator saved the orphanage an unbelievable $7,000 a month in generator rental costs; money they could better spend directly on these poor innocents. Eventually, I’ll move on to that “big picture” kind of work, but for now, I’m using my hands, as well as my mind, to help these people rebuild their lives.
