How do I prepare for my ultrasound exam?

Below are some of the exams performed here and their required preparation. If your exam is not listed then please contact us at 910-643-1731 for guidance.

Lower extremity venous doppler
Testicular
Thyroid
No Prep
Abdominal ultrasound
Right upper quadrant
Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours before your exam.
Renal (kidney) Ultrasound Drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before your exam. DO NOT urinate. Your bladder must be full to obtain optimal images.
Obstetrical ultrasound (complete/limited)

Pelvic ultrasound (transabdominal)
Drink 32 ounces of liquid (no soda or other carbonated beverages) 1 hour before your exam. DO NOT urinate.
Pelvic ultrasound (transvaginal) For transvaginal imaging, it is preferred the bladder be empty.

Family members are NOT allowed in the room during OB examinations. They can be brought into the room at the end of the exam at your request to see some pictures of the baby.
Breast
(ultrasound guided breast procedures)
No perfume, powders or deodorant on the chest or underarm area.
