Pope Field honors fallen Airmen during memorial ceremony

Air Force Senior Leadership from Pope Field render a salute during a memorial ceremony held here to honor Pope?s fallen Airmen. From left, Brig. Gen. Norman Ham, 440th Airlift Wing Commander, his fianc? Ms. Adele Mitchell, Col. Paul Kucharek, 43rd Airlift Group Commander, Col. Phillip Barks, 18th Air Support Operations Group Commander, Lt Col Michael Martin, the guest speaker, Command Chief Master Sgt. Jeff Roeder, 440th Airlift Wing, Chief Master Sgt. Eric Davis, 43rd Airlift Group Superintendent, Maj. James Alexander, 21st Special Tactics Squadron Director of Operations, and Senior Master Sgt. James Remington also from the 21st Special Tactics Squadron. Pope Airmen and civic leaders gathered for the ceremony that included the presentation of colors by the Air Force Honor Guard, inspirational words from the chaplain, a heartfelt memorial speech, placement of five wreaths representing the five Air Force major commands at Pope Field, and a twenty-one gun salute followed by Taps played by a bugler. Drinking and driving is a bad combination during the 101 days of Summer

Driving while drinking is possibly the leading cause of auto accidents resulting in death for Air Force members. During a recent 101 day staged accident demonstration at Pope Air Force Base, The driver had a blood alcohol count over 2.0. He was arrested in this scene while paramedics tried to save the life of his passenger. She was declared dead at the scene. This was a staged event, unfortunately scenes like this occur during the summer and the results are very real. Be Safe. Don't Drink and Drive. (Air Force photo by Mr. Jerry Green)

400th supports D-Day commemoration in France

440th Airlift Wing supported Operation Airdrop Warrior the first week of June 2008 commemorating the 64th Anniversary of D-Day in and around Normandy, France. Many Americans were buried at the American Cemetery which overlooks Omaha Beach, the primary landing zone for Americans during the D-Day invasion June 6, 1944. (U.S. Air Force Photo)
