Example
In the list below, a business is located in the following cities. Color alone is used to communicate which of those cities are the regional offices.
- New York, NY
- Chicago, IL
- Houston, TX
- Phoenix, AZ
- San Diego, CA
- Jacksonville, FL
- Memphis, TN
- Boston, MA
- Washington, DC
- Omaha, NE
The next list provides a textual character, an asterisk (*), in addition to the use of color, to denote regional office city status.
- New York, NY*
- Chicago, IL
- Houston, TX*
- Phoenix, AZ
- San Diego, CA*
- Jacksonville, FL*
- Memphis, TN
- Boston, MA
- Washington, DC
- Omaha, NE*
Without a textual symbol near the name of the city, blind and color blind users would have difficulty distinguishing which cities were denoted as the regional offices.
Forms provide other situations where color is sometimes used to indicate a required status
The form above does not provide alternative means for users who cannot distinguish color easily to determine what fields are required. However, when text or characters are used in addition to color (like the example below) all users receive the same access to the information.
