Center Life

A typical day at Whitney M. Young Jr. Job Corps is full of activities to help our students prepare for the real world. Students get up early and spend the majority of their day receiving academic and hands-on career technical training.

After class, students return to their dormitories for meetings and chores. Students then have dinner at 5 PM. After finishing dinner, students return to their dorms and spend their downtime studying or doing chores.

Students are required to be in their dorms by curfew at 9 PM every night except Wednesdays. On Wednesdays, curfew is 7:30 PM as students are responsible for a major dormitory clean up those nights. All students are required to be in bed by 10 PM in order to rest for the next day's tasks.

Recreation

Whitney M. Young Jr. Job Corps boasts one of the best recreation programs in the nation. Students find our recreational activities to be a fun and exciting way to meet new friends, socialize, and just relax and unwind at the end of the day. These activities include:

  • Aerobics
  • Basketball
  • Cheerleading
  • Choir
  • Karaoke
  • Table games
  • Pool/billiards

We also hold comedy and poetry jams, tag team rap competitions, talent shows, and video game tournaments.

Off Center Trips

We schedule various trips off center during the week and on weekends. These trips allow students to visit local attractions such as:

  • Bowling alleys
  • IMAX Science Center for the Arts
  • Libraries
  • Louisville Center for the Arts
  • Movie theaters
  • Museums
  • Shopping malls
  • Skating rinks

Student Government Association

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the voice of our students and is very involved in the operation of the center. Its responsibilities include:

  • Administering the Student Benefit Fund, which is used to purchase items that benefit all our students
  • Working with recreation staff to provide leisure time activities for students

SGA members have the opportunity to participate in center committee meetings and propose changes to center rules. Students are encouraged to speak to an SGA representative about concerns or ideas for activities.

Safety

Job Corps is committed to offering all students a safe and secure environment. That's why we have a Zero Tolerance Policy for violence and drugs. Any student who breaks this policy will be referred to the center’s Behavior Management System.
