Mentoring Racially and Ethnically Diverse Students and Faculty—What the Literature Tells Us

The National Center for Cultural Competence is working with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau's Division of Research, Training and Education (DRTE), to develop a plan to address mentoring for racially and ethnically diverse students and junior faculty who are underrepresented in MCHB funded training programs. The project builds on DRTE's history and commitment to address the gap in the number of professionals who are members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in the health professions. In this particular project, the goal is to understand the role of mentoring to address this gap. Based on the knowledge developed in this exploration, we will be making recommendations for a solution-focused action plan that MCHB can incorporate in its workforce development activities. In order to keep the MCHB funded training programs abreast of the activities of this project, there will be a series of webinars to share findings as they are developed. This webinar will present findings from a literature review on the topic.

Period of PURPLE Crying(r): Identification of a normal infant development period and its implications for preventing infant abuse

Purpose:
Shaken Baby Syndrome (or abusive head trauma) is the most serious form of infant abuse, and its incidence has increased during the current economic recession. According to published research in the areas of child development and infant abuse, a normal increase in infant crying in the first few months of life is the main trigger for this abuse. This research has provided an evidence base for a public health approach to preventing infant abuse, an example of which is the public education program, "Period of PURPLE Crying(r)," from the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome.
This webinar will describe the development, testing, and implementation of this program, including the results of three randomized trials of the effectiveness of changing knowledge and behaviors of caregivers, including high-risk caregivers. It will also describe the implementation and evaluation of two large trials in North Carolina and British Columbia.

Dr. Barr is the Canada Research Chair in Community Child Health Research at the Child and Family Research Institute of the BC Children's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia. He is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and Head of Developmental Neurosciences and Child Health at the Child and Family Research Institute. Along with the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, he is the co-developer of the Period of PURPLE Crying(r) program.

This two-day event will bring together stakeholders from government agencies, academic institutions, health care organizations and technology companies to:
- Review the state of telehealth science and technology

A workshop on the second day will yield specific recommendations to stimulate development, implementation and evaluation of telehealth applications for clinical care, clinical and translational research, and health education and training, with the ultimate goals to broaden participation in research and improve health outcomes in medically underserved communities.

Nutrition and Cancer Prevention Research Practicum
Location: National Cancer Institute facility at 6130 Executive Boulevard in Rockville, Maryland, the NIH Clinical Center and the USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Center.
This week long educational offering provides specialized instruction about the role of diet and bioactive food components as modifiers of cancer incidence and tumor behavior. The intent of the Practicum is to introduce participants to research currently being conducted in the field, expose them to research opportunities available in the field, and lay the foundation for future researchers in diet and cancer prevention. The Practicum is provided, at no cost to participants. However, no travel, hotel or per diem funds are available for participants. Leadership, Legacy, and Community: A Retreat To Advance Maternal and Child Health Scholarship and Practice

On July 16-18, 2008, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Program will host a pioneering MCH Leadership Retreat in Chicago on the UIC Campus.
Leadership, Legacy, and Community is a new professional development Retreat designed for interdisciplinary, junior and senior MCH practitioners and scholars. In this Retreat, we will convene to discuss, make recommendations, and identify strategies to address major evidence-based challenges we face in MCH (what to do when there is no intervention for an important problem, what to do if our intervention works but not for the intended problem, what to do if our intervention doesn't work for all populations, and what to do if we have a great intervention but no investment in it). We will also engage in training designed to further develop our leadership skills no matter what stage of career we are in (new to the workforce, mid-level career professional, seasoned professional) or type of career (academia or practice).
Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, we will lay the foundation for building an MCH community of academics and practitioners that draws on the energy and idealism of junior MCH professionals and the energy and wisdom of senior MCH professionals in both academic and practice settings. When these four groups gather together to collectively address the challenges we face in our daily struggle to improve MCH, we believe the synergistic impact will result in new energy, ideas, and collaborations that will help motivate and inspire us as we move forward.
Finally, we will be offering 30-minute leadership coaching sessions for attendees at the Retreat. Space is limited so please contact us to arrange for an appointment.

Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Course

National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course Hot topics of the upcoming conference include: Nutrition management of gestational diabetes, Glycemic index in pregnancy, Safety of over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements, Effect of maternal nutrition on brain development in early infancy, Nutrition needs of preterm infants, including home follow-up, Weight gain in adolescent pregnancy, Catch-up growth in infants and young children, Model programs for reaching teens and recent immigrant populations, Relationship between oral health and maternal/fetal outcomes. Sessions are available via distance education; all agencies that register for on-site attendance also receive complimentary distance education access for their worksite. Assuring Pediatric Nutrition in the Hospital and Community Sponsor: University of Washington This training is aimed at registered dietitians who see pediatric clients in their practices, but who have not had recent training in pediatric nutrition. The 3-day course is based on a core curriculum, but tailored to meet the specific needs of participants. Presenters include nutritionists and health care professionals who are experienced in pediatrics. Participants also will be included in the Pediatric Nutrition Consultation On-Line listserve after completing the course. This listserve provides on-going updates, answers to questions, and resources to help pediatric RDs.
