2011 Powell Center Working Group: Global Croplands and Their Water Use for Food Security in the Twenty-first Century - subsequent to Powell Center participation, this Working Group developed a proposal titled "Global Cropland Area Database (GCAD30) through Landsat and MODIS Data Fusion for the Years 2010 and 1990 and Its Dynamics Over Four Decades using AVHRR and MODIS" for which it received a $3.5 million dollar, 5-year grant from the NASA program: Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs). USGS News Release - Big Data a Big Deal
ADMINISTRATION'S DIGITAL DATA INITIATIVE TO INCLUDE USGS PROJECTS. The Hill (3/29, Sasso) reports in its "Hillicon Valley" blog that the USGS is one of the agencies taking part in the Administration's $200 million initiative "to research new technologies to manage and sift through large volumes of digital data," which "could lead to breakthroughs in science, engineering, healthcare and national security." In a statement, David McQueeney, IBM's vice president of software, praised the announcement, saying, "The Administration's work to advance research and funding of big data projects, in partnership with the private sector, will help federal agencies accelerate innovations in science, engineering, education, business and government." Other agencies taking part include the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Energy Department and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The National Journal (3/30, Smith) reports that at an event on Thursday, USGS Director Marcia McNutt said, "We're in danger of drowning in data while starving for understanding." She said that "too often, the government is gathering unmanageable amounts of information." The Federal News Radio (3/30) reports that McNutt added that "the John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis in Fort Collins, Colo. is bucking that trend."
In Eos article titled: White House announces "big data" initiative, USGS Director Marcia MacNutt states: "The huge advantage of the Big Data initiative is that it will create many more large data sets that are discoverable, available, and interoperable on the Web that will be fodder for these Powell Center projects and any other USGS research. I expect that other tools developed for data discovery and analysis through other agencies’ initiatives will also prove very valuable to the USGS."
