Onslow County teachers are learning that behavioral success in the classroom is better achieved by changing what they do instead of trying to change student behavior.
Educators from Onslow County Schools, Camp Lejeune and surrounding counties took part in free special education training under a new initiative for military-connected schools.
Sponsored by the Department of Defense Education Activity's Educational Partnership Branch, area teachers attended two 2-day seminars - challenging behaviors and secondary literacy - this week at Blue Creek Elementary School.

Fairbanks school district grants and projects director makes a difference

News-Miner FAIRBANKS - Last July, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District was awarded $16.9 million from the federal stimulus act to put toward student achievement. The single grant doubled the district's grant budget and gave life to 33 projects ranging from new musical instruments for schools, professional development for teachers and a boost for math curricula to $2 million in new computers. To score the government funding, the school district first had spell out how it would be spent from day one through September 2011.
"You have to have a plan for every single dime," said Traci Gatewood, director of grants and special projects for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. "Saying this is what you're going to do and this is how it's tied to our priorities."
