U.S Embassy Laos staff Nancy Walraven, a hobby quilter, created 12 quilts inspired by a book in homage to special quilts used by members of the Underground Railroad to aid people escaping from slavery in the United States during the Civil War period in the 1800s.  The patterns on the quilts are said to contain coded information that secretly guided, alerted and informed African-Americans about escape routes and safe-havens.  Ms. Walraven, will show her quilts and discuss her inspiration for and challenges in creating them.  A history expert from National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, joining the webchat from Washington, DC, will offer remarks about the film “Journey to Freedom.”
