Before we begin, hail to the Chipolopolo boys! Zambia is in the finals. Zambia has shown such leadership this year as a model democracy and now the Chipolopolo boys are leading in sport.

Today’s launch of the Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute will be another example as Zambians take the lead in charting their own economic future and in improving the lives of farmers through their own domestic expertise.

I am very happy to participate in the Safe Love: Think. Talk. Act media campaign launch in Southern Province today. This campaign, and the hard work that went into its preparation, is a wonderful example of the collaborative relationship between the Zambian and American people. The Safe Love campaign highlights the United States’ partnership with Zambia to support HIV prevention efforts nationwide.

The opening of the Chaisa Community Learning Center has been a true labor of love. The establishment and maintenance of this Center is a result of partnerships between the Zambian Government, the United States Government, multiple private companies, non-profit organizations, and generous individuals, some of whom you will hear from today. These partnerships will ensure the success of the center.

Today we stand on the threshold of the period during the year that we redouble our efforts to combat gender-based violence.

I am referring to the “16 days of activism against gender violence campaign,” which has occurred from November 25 through December 10 every year since 1991.

These 16 days are bookmarked by two key dates:
November 25 is the International Day against Violence against women;
and December 10 is International Human Rights Day.

Today we celebrate the launch of the Feed the Future Initiative in Zambia. This initiative marks a new era in partnership between the American people and the Zambian people to fight poverty and improve food security.

Over the next five years, the USG will provide $100 million in funding for agriculture and nutrition programming in Zambia. The programs will support Zambia’s efforts to reduce rural poverty, increase, and bring the benefits of economic growth to all Zambians.
