Important Notice from the Internal Revenue Service for Passport Applicants

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka encourages all passport applicants to read the advisory on their passport applications about the requirement to provide Social Security Numbers on all applications for U.S. passports.  This requirement, under Section 6039E of the Internal Revenue Code, makes the failure to provide a valid Social Security Number when applying for a U.S. passport or for the renewal of a U.S. passport an offense punishable by a $500 fine.  The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) points out that a U.S. citizen, if their income is over a certain threshold, has an obligation to file a U.S. tax return, and in order to file that return a Social Security Number is required.  American citizens without a valid Social Security Number should see the Federal Benefits section of the American Citizen Services website for information on how to apply for a Social Security Number.
