During fiscal year 2010 (October 1, 2009 - September 30, 2010) the NIH Common Fund made nine new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) awards totaling $38.4M. These programs of research are unique and highly innovative, and have the potential to dramatically accelerate discovery in biomedicine
and development of new treatments for myriad diseases and disorders. For example, Thomas Grabowski (University of Washington) and colleagues are using
new systems neuroimaging approaches to investigate age-related cognitive decline, neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer disease and
Parkinson's disease), and rehabilitation of paralysis using brain-computer interfaces (1RC4NS073008-01). In contrast,
Mitchell Kronenberg (La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology) and colleagues are constructing a screening facility that provides the "
libraries" of molecular reagents and instrumentation needed to conduct large-scale investigations of how the body fights off infectious and
autoimmune diseases and cancers (1RC4AI092763-01). In another highly innovative program of research, Cameron Currie (University of Wisconsin - Madison) and
colleagues are using "high-throughput screening" and mouse models of disease to first identify and then evaluate the anti-infective potential
of small molecules derived from untapped sources of natural products (1RC4GM096347-01).
