June 2010 Seminar Series
In commemoration of Men's Health Month, the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) invites you to the next NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series scheduled for June 17, 2010.
Our society often overlooks the importance of men's health on family wellbeing. Research has proven that men influence the development of children and the physical and financial health of their partners. A study by the University of Maryland Baltimore County found that 40 percent of widows and 25 percent of divorced women slip into poverty during the five years after a marriage ends1. Even though men play an important role in the health of their families, they do not take care of themselves and often disregard preventative care. Also, men account for most work-related deaths in the United States and have higher suicide rates than women do. Click here for abstract.
Our speaker, Dr. Jean Bonhomme, Founder and President of the National Black Men's Health Network (NBMHN), works to improve the health of underserved communities through programs that address men's health. Dr. Bonhomme will discuss the importance men's health has on community health and the barriers that prevent men from participating in health programs. He will then discuss strategies to increase male participation in health programs.
Following his lecture, there will be an interactive panel presentation by individuals involved in men's health programs. Interventions to improve the health status of men involve understanding the interplay between the dynamics of being male, not only biologically, but culturally and socially. Dr. Bonhomme will speak about the policy perspectives of addressing men's health issues. Greg Plummer, a barbershop owner who runs a Men's Health Barbershop Program in Gaithersburg, MD., will give the community perspective and Dr. Mark Rosenblum, a urologist who runs a Men's Cancer Screening clinic for uninsured men in the Washington, D.C. area, will give the health professional perspective. Dr. Derrick Tabor, Health Scientist Administrator at the NCMHD will facilitate the panel.
