The Marine Biogeochemistry Section conducts basic and applied research on marine, coastal, estuarine and atmospheric elemental cycling. Research topics that are addressed by the scientific team include: 1) biogeochemical influence on methane hydrate formation, stability, export and lattice saturation; 2) in situ biological attenuation of organic contaminants in military harbors; 3) anthropogenic and natural element source and fate; 4) estuarine and coastal carbon cycling and 5) higher energy logistics fuel development; 6) airborne biogeochemical transport and 7) geochemical validation of remote sensing in coastal waters. Within the US work has been conducted in coastal and harbor waters throughout Chesapeake Bay, Atchafalaya Bay, Puget Sound, Delaware Bay and San Francisco Bay, and in San Diego, Pearl Harbor and Charleston SC. Internationally projects are conducted through collaborations with scientists from Chile, New Zealand, Norway, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Current coastal ocean research planning focuses on the Arctic Ocean, Bay of Bengal, mid-Chilean Margin, and the Hikurangi Margin off New Zealand.
