May 2011 Seminar Series
In commemoration of Asian American Heritage Month, the National Institutes of Health is pleased to welcome Dr. David T. Takeuchi as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on May 26, 2011.
There are more than 11 million Asian Americans living in the United States, and recent US Census estimates project that their numbers will triple by midcentury. The relative success of many Asian immigrants in adapting to American society gave rise to the "model minority myth", which obscured the real health problems experienced by Asian communities. Coming from nearly fifty countries and ethnic groups, each with distinct cultures, traditions, and histories, and speaking over 100 languages and dialects, Asian Americans differ enormously according to wealth and education, and this diversity extends to their health outcomes. Thus for example, although health indicators for Asian Americans overall are relatively positive, the rate of cervical cancer among Vietnamese women is five times that of Caucasian women, and Asian Indians have an unusually high rate of coronary artery disease.
Adopting a historical perspective in a talk entitled "Back to the Future or Lost in Translation: Studying Health in Asian American Communities", Dr. Takeuchi will describe how over the past 100 years historians, social scientists, and community activists brought forth narratives of the struggles, the successes, and the disappointments of Asian Americans and then discuss the positive and negative effects of these narratives. He will also consider future research themes that provide opportunities and challenges for the next generation of scientists who study health in Asian American communities. A sociologist with postdoctoral training in epidemiology and health services research, Dr. Takeuchi is a professor and the Associate Dean for Research at the School of Social Work at the University of Washington. His research focuses on the social, structural, and cultural contexts that are associated with different health outcomes, especially among racial and ethnic minorities. He also has examined the use of health services in different ethnic communities.
