What You Can Do
Due to the complex nature of oil cleanup, health and safety concerns, and the fact that NRDA is a legal process, the role of volunteers in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill damage assessment is limited. The Deepwater Unified Area Command has specified that volunteers or unpaid individuals are not allowed to perform hands-on hazardous waste remediation.
But you can help! There are a variety of volunteer opportunities that do not require special training, such as patrolling the beaches and shorelines for the presence of oil. You can also attend public meetings to learn more about the damage assessment process and give your input on the restoration plan.
